Royal National Park – Wattamolla

To celebrate the start of Labour Day Weekend we headed to Royal National Park located just south of Sydney. The park is huge, approx. 40,000 acres with numerous walking and biking trails, as well as beautiful coves and beaches. We drove to Wattamolla meaning “place near running water” which is halfway along the coastline of the park. The area is really stunning; a small beach with perfect yellow sand is tucked away in a deep bay. Behind the beach is a lagoon which is lined with sand on one side and cliffs and rocks on the other. The lagoon is fed by the waters of Wattamolla and Coote Creeks which tumble over the sandstone rock face into the lagoon below as a beautiful waterfall, before finding its way into the sea. Wattamolla Falls were a gentle trickle whilst we were there but apparently after rainfall they can be really fast flowing.  The water was pretty cold so it was a good thing the sun was shining. Tim and Pigeon decided they were going to jump from the top of the waterfall into the lagoon below but after 20 minutes of standing on the edge and peering over they chickened out and took the walk of shame down.

From Wattamolla, we headed up the coastal path to Providential Point Lookout. Providential Point is the southern headland forming the bay that is Wattamolla Beach and Lagoon. The small lookout is fenced and perched on the edge of the rocks. An easy uphill walk and we reached the point which had amazing views of the cliffs on the north side of Wattamolla Bay to Boy Martin Point.  We climbed over the fence and decided to continue climbing up the sandstone cliff. Following a small trail through thick heath we emerged at the top of the coastal track, right on the cliff edge. There was an amazing rock formation called Eagle Rock which hung right over the sea. It is iconic within the park so we stood on the edge and took the obligatory photos before heading back down.
