New Adventures: Myanmar
Having spent the last 2.5 years exploring Australia (with a side trip to New Zealand) it's a pretty big deal for me to be heading overseas again. And to a continent I've never been to - Hello Asia! With tourism in Myanmar still a fairly new development I am excited to experience this magical "Golden Land" that is still so undiscovered.
So where exactly is Myanmar? The Republic of the Union of Myanmar (previously Burma), is sandwiched between Bangladesh, India, China, Laos and Thailand. With a fairly tumultuous history, for many years Myanmar remained frozen in time behind a wall of self-isolation, but now it has reopened its borders to the outside world and I feel extremely privileged to be able to experience the unique culture and traditions as well the amazing scenery this country has to offer.
However, behind the beauty, Myanmar is still a complicated country in a state of flux and with cultural sensitivities, in particular the persecution and treatment of Myanmar's Rohingya Muslim population which is making headlines around the world. As much as possible we will be practicing sustainable travel and supporting local establishments instead of state-run equivalents.
Over the next few weeks we will visiting a myriad of places. From remote beaches, archaeological wonders and colonial buildings, to ornate pagodas and temples, the Himalayan foothills, hill tribe villages and jungles - so keep your eyes peeled for the (let's be honest, probably irregular) updates!
